Summary
This NIST-led paper addresses a core digital thread problem: product lifecycle information sits in many separate repositories and is hard to link, put into context and reuse.
It proposes a Lifecycle Information Framework and Technology (LIFT) concept that uses standards, linked data and semantic web techniques to connect design, manufacturing and inspection data, and to feed information back from production into design.
Our verdict
Recommended for digital thread work. One of the clearest early descriptions of what connecting lifecycle data across repositories actually requires — and a free NIST manuscript is available.
Who should read it
- —PLM and digital thread architects
- —Manufacturing and quality engineers working on design–production feedback
- —Anyone evaluating model-based enterprise initiatives
How it relates to your work
- —Directly relevant to linking PLM with MES, quality and inspection systems.
- —Gives a vocabulary for discussing closed-loop, standards-based data exchange.
Keep in mind
- —A research concept, not a product or turnkey method.
- —Assumes some familiarity with standards such as STEP, QIF and MTConnect.
