Many aerospace and defense companies operate in program and project-centric engineer-to-order (ETO) and/or configure-to-order (CTO) environments. Products are often very complex and consist of thousands of mechanical, electrical, electronic and software components that need to be managed on an integrated engineering bill of material (EBOM) and then translated to a manufacturing-centric manufacturing bill of material (MBOM). Because products usually have life cycles of many decades and are subject to stringent compliance requirements, all documentation has to be maintained during the entire life of the product and many years afterwards.
